The St. Petersburg paradox refers to a lottery that pays $2n when a coin comes up heads for the first time on the first repetition and, therefore, has an infinite expected value; however, agents would only spend a limited amount on a ticket that would allow them to participate in the lottery. The paradox is used to make the point that rational agents make decisions based on expected utility, rather than on expected value.
